Sustainability

We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful place – between the South Downs Park and Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and we are acutely aware that this is a fragile landscape and are committed to doing what we can to protect it and to reduce our impact on the environment more widely.

We are a member of Green Tourism which both assesses how well we are doing and helps and encourages us to continue the constant task of improving our sustainability.

Our over-riding aim is to ensure that our guests have a comfortable and enjoyable stay and we ensure that this is our priority whilst continuing to reduce our impact on the world around us.

Energy

We have installed solar panels which provide the majority of our electricity and also help to reduce our gas consumption; we have an EV charger and have ordered an electric car to further reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. All rooms have a thermostat to allow guests to adjust their own heating. We use low energy bulbs where possible and are replacing all our fittings with LEDs.

Water

We have an on-site biodisc water treatment plant which uses biological processes to clean all the waste water produced by the property.

Waste

All our waste is divide into one of six streams – our Hotbox composter deals with food waste and shredded paper; our garden waste bin is used for non-compostable organic waste; we separate soft plastic for recycling; we have an excellent council recycling system and anything else that can be re-used or recycled is disposed of through donation to Charity or through websites like Freecycle or taken to the Council HWRS. Finally, we send a small amount to landfill.

Each room has a bin divided into two to enable guests to help us to recycle.

Plastic

We avoid single use plastic wherever possible. Our toiletries are in refillable bottles, we have re-usable bottles for milk and water and have washable inserts in the room bins rather than plastic bags.

Food & Drink

We support local producers (including ourselves!). Much of the produce that we use is sourced from the surrounding area: sausages, wine, gin, chocolate and many other items are produced in the immediate neighbourhood. We have our own flock of hens to provide eggs and our garden supplies most of the flowers for the rooms as well as tomatoes, strawberries, asparagus, rhubarb, herbs and spinach when in season. We are particularly proud of our sweet peas which are grown from seed supplied by a local expert. You can read more about these local producers and suppliers HERE.
